A little bit ago we celebrated Mardi Gras with a gallery of colorful tattoos that depicted the massive celebration, so it seems only fitting that we follow that gallery with one about Ash Wednesday – the day for which Mardi Gras exists.
For those of you who don’t believe in Christianity – or aren’t Angelicans, Lutherans, Roman Catholics, or are part of some other sect of Christianity that doesn’t observe Ash Wednesday – the day following Mardi Gras is a day of fasting that marks the first day of Lent. The Christian period of Lent consists of 40 days of fasting, which doesn’t count the six Sundays on which fasting is postponed, leading up to Easter.
Traditionally, fasting means not eating or drinking, but nowadays a lot of practitioners deem Lent as a time to give up something secular and/or precious. For instance, someone who loves movies might not watch any movies in observance of Lent instead of not eating or drinking six days a week for six weeks.
This year, in 2016 (for those reading this well into the future), Ash Wednesday took place on February 10th and Lent will end on March 27th – which is Easter Sunday. During this time some of your friends and/or family members, possibly you too, will give up various hobbies and potentially change their eating habits in observance of the 40 days Jesus Christ spent fasting in the desert while enduring temptation by Satan.
In honor of this period, we’ve collected a gallery of Christian tattoos that depict the solemn beliefs of tattoo enthusiasts who also celebrate Lent. The varied community of people who enjoy and sport tattoos is one of the greatest strengths of the art form and we here at Tattoo Artist Magazine strive to celebrate each belief and religious holiday we can.
